How to Prevent the Summer Slide

Stop+the+Summer+Slide

Going down a slide is every child’s favorite thing to do, especially during summertime... but there’s a difference between a waterslide and the summer slide. The type of slide we’re referencing is not so fun and can lead to a decline in essential math and reading skills.

Every year, students of all ages return to school in a worse state than before the summer break. It’s a phenomenon that’s been studied again and again. And while most people agree that students need a well-earned break, halting their education completely for a few months every year can have real, long-term effects. The answer is finding a balance by making time for playing, relaxing, and studying.

Students that tend to suffer the least from summer brain drain are those with access to quality education programs, as well as learning resources like summer reading and activity sheets.

What is Summer Learning Loss?

Summer learning loss, also called the summer slide, refers to adverse effects a long break from learning during the summer months can have on a child's academic skills.

What Can I Do?

Enrolling your child at an Eye Level Learning Center can provide structure, engagement, and motivation during the summer months. Summer programs don't need to overwhelm students or disrupt vacations and relaxation. Studies have indicated that it's enough for a child to study just a few hours per week to prevent losing their hard-earned knowledge from the previous school year.

Establish a routine with your child that includes time to read, play and study each week.
