COVID-19 has led
to the closure of schools across the globe. In the absence of classrooms,
education worldwide has drastically changed in the last 3 months. There has
been a distinctive rise of e-learning initiatives, where teaching is being
undertaken via digital platforms.
Eye Level has been
a pioneer of digital learning right from the outset. Compared to traditional
classroom-based teaching, e-learning can promote faster retention and learning
at each child’s own pace. Moreover, it provides students the option to go back
and re-read materials or simply accelerate through concepts, as required. Technology
can increase engagement levels too, by making learning more fun, interactive
and motivating.
Keeping the need
to motivate and engage students through this difficult time, Eye Level has
decided to conduct its 2020 Math Olympiad or Eye Level Math Olympiad (ELMO)
online. The aim is to promote mathematical talent throughout the country, as
well as give students a fun exercise during the lock down.
Since 2004, Eye
Level has been conducting the Math Olympiad annually, with participation of thousands
of students across 15 countries. The tests are designed to challenge children’s
math skills in various areas, including algebra, geometry, reasoning, data analysis,
problem solving and operations.
Math is very often
viewed as a difficult subject. The idea of the test is to foster a love for the
subject among school students, enabling them to develop skills to apply mathematical
concepts to real-life problems. A firm grasp on the fundamentals is needed to do
well on this test and the best talent is rewarded generously.
Every year, ELMO is
conducted in a pen and paper version, but owing to the current circumstances,
the test will be conducted online in 2020. The event will be one of its kinds
in India.
- The event will
be conducted in 3 rounds, with 15 questions in each round.
- Each round will
have students from the same grade. At a time, 6 to 7 students will participate
in one round, where they will be filtered as the rounds progress.
- The event will be like a fun quiz. It will be conducted on an online platform, where the quiz master will be present, along with 6-7 participants.
- The children
need to ensure that their microphone and camera are on.
- The quiz master will share a PowerPoint presentation on the screen, which will contain the
questions in sequential order.
- There will be 15
questions in each round and every question will need to be answered within a
time limit. This will depend on the complexity of the question. The time limit
can range from 20 seconds to 100 seconds.
- When the
question is shown on the screen, the quiz master will start the timer for all to
see.
- Every
participant will need to wait till the end of the time limit to write their
answer on a plain sheet and show it to the camera. Showing their answers before
the timer runs out may lead to other students changing their answers. So, keep
your competitive cap on!
- Parents will not
be allowed to help under any circumstance. The child will, unfortunately, be
asked to leave if this is found even in the slightest form.
- Now, there might
be unique ways of writing the answer. So, it’s vital to pay attention to the
instructions in the PowerPoint presentation.
For example, the
answer to the question 56x7 is 392. But the kids might need to present the
answer in the form of 3+9+2 = 14. In a way, the test not only challenges
mathematical skills but also logical and quick-thinking abilities.
- The round’s
complexity and filtration will keep becoming tough with each round. So, the
child needs to be more alert and quicker round.
What’s the best part of all this? The students with top score in their grades will be awarded Amazon voucher of ₹5,000, followed by voucher of ₹3,000 and ₹1,500 to the 2nd highest and 3rd highest scores respectively. Students getting top 5 scores will be awarded with Amazon voucher of ₹500.
This will be a fun and engaging exercise for children who might be feeling frustrated being trapped within their homes during the lockdown. Children are now attending their daily school classes online, which can become boring and monotonous after a while. They are missing their friends and the daily activities they used to pursue. ELMO@Home will be something to look forward to and revive a competitive spirit in them.
