Embark on the journey of an exceptional Center director, Lau Yu Jia, whose expertise and passion for education have forged a unique approach to learning.
Her story begins when she was just 14 years-old, working as a swimming coach. It quickly became clear that she had a keen understanding of the most important things when starting something new. When I told her that I couldn’t swim, the first thing she asked was if I was scared of the water. This story shows how well she grasps the crucial starting point in any new endeavour.
Her insights aren't limited to swimming. She knows that in subjects like math or language, it's not only about teaching but also about sparking interest and giving a strong basic understanding.
Her leadership at the center is proof of her ability to connect with people at their level, motivating and guiding them to discover things on their own. She's a true coach, helping learners through her own excellent guidance. Dive into her story and that of Ngam Lee Yang, the Eye Level Math Instructor, in the following interview:
🙋🏻♀Hello. Ms. Lau Yu Jia. I heard that you are still working both as center director and swimming coach. Sounds fantastic! Do you have a personal teaching philosophy from your extensive experience as a teacher?
👩🏻🏫Lau Yu Jia: We encounter a variety of students at our learning center – they have different learning abilities, learning styles, and mindsets, even if they're the same age. I believe that teachers play a crucial role in discovering students’ interests. It requires careful observation and continuous assessment of their responses to different teaching methods.
That’s why I always try to experiment with various instructional techniques, including visual aids, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning. By continuously assessing and adjusting our approach, we have been able to accommodate diverse learning styles and help each student thrive.
👩🏻🏫Lau Yu Jia: As an instructor and the center director, I believe that establishing a strong rapport with students is crucial for their engagement and success. I focus on being approachable, attentive, and empathetic toward their individual learning journeys.
Taking the time to understand their interests, strengths, and areas for improvement, we create a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking support through open communication, active listening, and genuine care.
🙋🏻♀How do you provide support for students who need development in learning?
👩🏻🏫Lau Yu Jia: We conduct a diagnostic test with every student to determine the right starting point first. The thing is, when we review the diagnostic test results, some parents may find it challenging to accept that their children scored lower on the test. However, it's important for them to understand and try to accept this.
Children generally grasp the need to come here to study and improve, even though it may take time. I can say with confidence that it's a worthwhile process, because with the right starting point, they will make significant progress. And here’s something else you might want to know - we have experienced teachers to guide them perfectly!
👨🏫Ngam Lee Yang: Hello, I am a Math Instructor here. I believe I am skilled at communicating with children because I am passionate and enjoy sharing my experiences with them.
Let me share one of my instructional techniques. I consistently encourage children to imagine how to solve problems, whether it's in Basic Thinking Math or Critical Thinking Math.
In my opinion, the most important aspect is to empower children to discover solutions on their own. I motivate them to think more and imagine more because it's the key to developing their learning skills. By fostering this mindset, I aim to instill in them the confidence to take any mathematical challenge.
